Oh sweet, sweet memories that softly rise,
The gentle smile you bring when you are near;
My heart o'erflows beneath familiar skies,
With love I cannot hide, nor make less clear.
I was—and perhaps still am—caught in your grace,
Wishing our story held a brighter hue,
That I had held it in a tight embrace,
And thanked the heavens zillion times for you.
Perhaps I never earned a joy so deep,
And that is why these echoes must suffice;
Through every shadow that my steps must keep,
My bad luck follows like a cold advice.
Yet it is fine; I count myself profound
To have beheld such light before the end,
To cherish every fleeting, holy ground,
Before my closing eyes the shadows blend.
